Preparing your Body for Surgery

How Good Health Helps Post-Surgery Recovery

Being in good health is an important part of a well-balanced life, and has numerous benefits after recovering from surgery. When going into any sort of surgical procedure, here in Marin County or elsewhere, it’s important to make sure your body is prepared. While keeping your body in good health may not be a necessity in order to perform a surgical procedure, it is always recommended if possible. The reasons why is simple: your body is designed to naturally heal itself when it needs to. And when you’re in good shape, healthy, and well rested, the process of recovery can go much smoother, and with less pain than if you’re out of shape or in poor health.

What does it mean to be in “good health”?

The definition of good health can be very general, and not universal for all people. However, when we reference good health for recovery, there are some pretty clear benchmarks.  A good diet, no smoking, daily exercise, and 8 hours of sleep are all easy steps you can take to prepare for a quick recovery here in Santa Rosa & Marin County. That being said, many of our patients here at our Marin County offices seek surgical procedures to help put them on the right track to good health.

This includes many who come fore liposuction and weight removal surgeries. We understand this, and will work with you to prepare your recovery process to make it as smooth and painless as possible. But no matter who you are, there are a few simple steps you can take before your proceed.

Prepare for recovery by being preventative before surgery

If you’re in Santa Rosa, San Rafael, Sausalito, Mill Valley, or the greater Marin County in general, you know that living a healthy fit lifestyle is very popular. We live in a great area as far as healthy life choices; and when preparing for your surgery, or more importantly your recovery, it’s never too early to start making them. Get a head start by first concentrating on your diet. Drink a lot of water to help make your skin healthier, and keep your metabolism strong. Also, a low sugar, plant-based, high fiber, and high protein diet is a good start, and a good way to make your body and immune system stronger before surgery. We also recommend cutting down or stopping smoking, if you are a regular smoker.

Don’t rush your recovery

Regardless of what quality of health you’re in, it’s important to remember to not rush through the recovery process. With any procedure we offer, here in our Marin County clinic, you’re going to have to take some time to rest and recover immediately after completion. Lots of bed rest for the first few day is recommended, and we recommend you avoid physical tasks, or time-strenuous tasks in general. For certain procedures, all it takes is a week or so. For others, it may be longer. We go over this on a case-by-case basis, and will make sure you have the proper recovery plan for your body type, health, and procedure.

Remember to listen to your body. If you’re feeling fatigued, stressed, or anxious after your procedure, take some time off and rest. Make sure to maintain a healthy routine throughout the process with a good diet, plenty of water, and limited tobacco if possible. If you start out with a healthy routine and lifestyle ahead of time, you can make this whole process easier, and heal faster. Either way, we want you to look your best, feel your best, and get the best results.
