Breast Reconstructrion

Modern surgical technology makes it possible to construct a natural-looking breast after mastectomy (breast removal) for cancer or other diseases. The procedure is commonly begun and sometimes completed immediately following mastectomy, so that the patient wakes with a new breast mound instead of no breast at all. Alternatively, reconstruction may begin years after mastectomy. Insurance companies cover reconstruction following breast cancer surgery, and Congress has legislated to make coverage mandatory.  Also, in the state of California, procedures on the contralateral breast for symmetry are mandated for insurance coverage as well.

Women whose cancer seems to have been eradicated with mastectomy are the best candidates for breast reconstruction. Those with health problems such as obesity and high blood pressure and those who smoke are sometimes advised to wait. Others prefer to postpone surgery as they come to terms with having cancer, consider the extent of the procedure, or explore alternatives.  However, most women choose and are eligible for immediate reconstruction. There are several ways to reconstruct the breast, both with and without implants; your breast surgeon and plastic surgeon should work together with you in deciding which approach is best for you.

The most common used method is using tissue expanders and permanent breast implants.  A breast expander is placed underneath the chest muscle at the time of the mastectomy.  As an outpatient, the expander is gradually expanded to the desired size before a second outpatient surgery is required to replace the tissue expander with the desired implant.Other methods include using your own body tissue. Examples include using your lower abdominal tissue or your back muscle.  A personalized plan can be determined during your consultation. Breast reconstruction has not been proven to affect the recurrence of cancer or other diseases, chemotherapy or radiation treatment.

Hand Surgery

Hand surgery is a specialized type of procedure that may be performed to correct a wide range of diseases, injuries and defects that may cause symptoms and/or affect the appearance of the hand. Hand surgery can be performed for both medical and cosmetic purposes. Your hand surgery procedure will be customized in order to repair your individual condition and leave your hands looking and feeling their best.

Because of their frequent use, the hands are a common location for injuries and degenerative disorders such as arthritis. Many people are born with birth defects of the hand as well. Hand surgery can restore function, relieve pain and improve the appearance of the hands for patients suffering from cysts, nerve conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis, birth defects and other conditions.
